About Roanoke, TX

Roanoke was originally named the Medlin Settlement. Settlers and their families originally built their homes near Denton Creek, just north of present-day Roanoke. The town was named after Louis and Charles Medlin, whose families were in the colony. As more settlers came to the area, the settlement was moved closer to what is now the present location. In the early 1880s, more families began to move to the area that was being laid out by the Texas & Pacific Railway. The area was renamed to Roanoke by one of the railroad surveyors in honor of his hometown in Virginia.
